So Who Was Da Vinci – and why did you name your restaurant after him?

Da Vinci was an all-round genius whose paintings and inventions changed the world. Born in the Tuscan town of Vinci in 1452 he was an artist, a sculptor, an architect, engineer, scientist and inventor. The illegitimate son of a notary, Messer Piero, and a peasant woman, Caterina, he had no surname in the modern sense as Da Vinci simply means, ‘of Vinci’.

He is best known for painting ‘The Mona Lisa’, which hangs behind bullet proof glass in The Louvre in Paris and the 15×29 ft mural, ‘The Last Supper’, painted on the walls of the dining hall at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.
His drawings show designs for items that would later be known as gliders, parachutes and bicycles but his most famous must surely be ‘Vetruvian Man’, as featured in the best selling novel, The Da Vinci Code. .
A less well known fact is that he wrote most of his personal notes in mirror writing, which is formed by writing in the reverse direction so that it only it appears normal when it is reflected in a mirror.
He died in France in May 1519 at the age of 67.
